You will get to know other wonderful, caring older adults. You will become important to the community and the children. You will learn new things. You will know that you are making a difference. You will have fun!

I have many years experience as a teacher. Do I need to go through the training before becoming a tutor?
Yes. It is important for everyone who will become an Experience Corps tutor to learn what the program expects of tutors. The training also includes other topics particular to Experience Corps and is also a wonderful chance to get to know other members!

  1. Complete an application.

  2. Participate in an in-person interview.

  3. Clear a fingerprint background check and TB test.

  4. Attend the new member training.

Do I need to have experience teaching or working with children?
Not at all. Pre-service and ongoing trainings are provided. You do need patience and dedication, a love of learning, and to enjoy being with children.

How is Experience Corps different from other tutoring programs?
Experience Corps specifically recruits adults 55 years and older to be mentors and tutors to disadvantaged youth. We believe that by making full use of the life experience of our members, children, schools, and communities benefit. Our members serve in teams (our goal is to place 10-15 members per school) and often dedicate a significant number of hours per week. Our members are trusted and praised by principals and teachers for their consistency and flexibility. Furthermore, Experience Corps staff provide day-to-day on-site support, ongoing training, and monthly team meetings.

What will I do?
Experience Corps members work with elementary students who need extra attention. Most members tutor in reading or math, help students complete classroom assignments, or lead enrichment activities after school. Members work with students individually and in small groups. Each member's placement is specialized to fit his/her skills and the needs of students.
