Experience Corps MesaThe Experience Corps program in Mesa is hosted by Make A Difference, Mesa Community College, and Mesa Public Schools — and sponsored by the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust. The program serves students in fourth grade during the school day, and members are assigned one or two to a classroom. The members work at the direction of the teacher to support student literacy with a focus on increasing student achievement in the areas of reading and writing. The program currently operates in two elementary schools within the Mesa Public School District. The Mesa model of Experience Corps is being implemented with a 3-way partnership between Mesa Community College (MCC), Mesa Public Schools (MPS) and Make A Difference. MCC served 27,500 students in Fall 2005 at two comprehensive campuses and three centers in Mesa. MPS is the state´s largest school district with over 74,000 students — 8,600 of whom are English language learners representing more than 54 languages, with the majority speaking Spanish — attending 80 different sites ranging from early kindergarten through 12th grade. MPS is the host site for the project and provides fiscal and instructional support. Make A Difference provides volunteer resources to 300 community service organizations that address many service areas including children, education, homelessness, domestic violence, seniors, and animal welfare, and coordinates member recruitment, management and screening for Experience Corps Mesa. These three organizations have hosted Experience Corps in Mesa since 2006. |
