Experience Corps Minneapolis/St. Paul
The Experience Corps program in Minneapolis/St. Paul is hosted by Volunteers of America of Minnesota. Older adult tutors work with struggling students in nine area public schools, providing literacy tutoring in kindergarten through third grade classrooms. Tutors are community members who work with students one-on-one or in small groups under supervision of the classroom teacher, and they express great personal satisfaction in working with the children and in providing a vital service to their community and the national literacy movement.
The mission of Volunteers of America of Minnesota is to enhance the lives of society´s most needy members through the provision of social services that enable them to maximize their independence and achieve the skills necessary to be successful, contributing community members. VOA has sponsored the literacy program (now called Experience Corps) involving older adults since 1995.
