Boston Resident Turns Disability into Strength
WINS 2004 NATIONAL ‘SPIRIT OF SERVICE’ AWARD
BOSTON – It’s not often that accountants receive national service awards, but Tom Hamel is not your average accountant. Born with a craniofacial syndrome called Treacher Collins, the 31-year-old Acton native has used his accounting knowledge, love of the outdoors, and personal experiences with a hearing impairment to help disadvantaged, disabled, and disaffected youth get a better start in life.

The U.S. Corporation for National and Community Service will honor Hamel’s commitment and record of accomplishment with the Spirit of Service Award. The award is given to one AmeriCorps alumni each year for exemplifying the spirit of national service, demonstrating exceptional service or leadership, and serving as role models for their community.

Over the past six years, Hamel’s contributions include:

  • Revamping the Blackfeet Youth Initiative’s accounting system on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Montana to attract funding to teach leaderships skills for young people
  • Helping troubled young people in Montana by developing intensive community service projects that gave them a way to pay their debt to their communities, contribute to society, and gain a new perspective on their own lives.
  • Co-founding and directing the Treacher Collins Connection, an international organization dedicated to helping those with the syndrome to support and learn from each other.
  • Helping to guide whitewater rafting, kayaking and backpacking programs at Outdoor Explorations, for people with and without disabilities in New England.
  • Serving as the Director of Finance, Administration, and Technology for Generations Incorporated, a Boston-based nonprofit that builds stronger communities by engaging retirees in programs that, among other things, help struggling youngsters learn to read.

“Tom Hamel is the soul of our organization,” notes Mary Gunn, executive director of Generations Incorporated. “His welcoming, patient, warm personality sets the tone for volunteers and staff alike. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award.”
Tom will be presented the Spirit of Service Award at a national conference in Kansas City in early June.
