Experience Corps is hosted in New York City by the Community Service Society of New York. The program engages volunteers ages 55 and over in service to improve the literacy skills of elementary school students at risk for academic failure. Experience Corps members work in teams of 10-12 per school providing one-on-one individualized tutoring to K-5 students who struggle with reading. In addition, volunteers provide overall classroom assistance by conducting small reading groups and working with individual children.
Some Experience Corps members in New York City work as part of the Prejudice Reduction Project, an award-winning intergenerational project that places trained senior volunteers in elementary school classrooms to reduce prejudice and build an understanding and respect for human differences. The program was created on Staten Island in 1990 to help ameliorate the communitys racial tensions that were being witnessed in the community, and was quickly expanded to reach children in grades K-5 and operate in all five boroughs. More than 7,500 students have participated in the projects initiatives.
