Makes A Huge Difference in Kids' Academic Performance
Ms. Gelormino, 1st grade teacher at Civicorps Elementary
Oakland
My Experience Corps member is incredible. She knows exactly what to do with the kids I send her. Sometimes she'll notice something and be able to articulate it even better than I could because she's spent time working 1:1 with a child. Having her as my own personal volunteer is making a huge difference in the academic performance of my kids. Almost every student in my class has benefited and has improved at an accelerated rate because of her."

Such a Devoted Volunteer
Karen Larson, Teacher
Minneapolis/St. Paul
I have been teaching for 24 years and I have never had such a devoted volunteer. She has had such an impact on my students academically and socially. I do not have any students (except for my special ed students) in the red (below grade level) this year. Most of my students are in the green (at grade level) or only a few away from green. This is one of my best years for student achievement and I give Mary credit for helping make that possible.

A Letter of Thanks
AnnaMarie Erbes, principal, Frost Lake Magnet School
Minneapolis/St. Paul
To All Experience Corps Members,
Many people do not understand the need and value of tutoring in an elementary school. They have not experienced the tug of the pant leg for attention, or the tug at one's heart when children genuinely share their excitement to see you, to be read to, to understand complex addition and subtraction computations.
Many people have not experienced the genuine gratitude of teachers who rely on tutors to help meet the diverse needs of their students, adults helping adults to enrich the lives of children.
Do not underestimate the role that you play to support public education, to support the future of today's youth, and to influence the future of society. Somewhere in our country, in an elementary school, does sit the next president of the United States. He or she deserves the best. Thank you all for doing your best to impact our collective future.

Number of Office Referrals Dropped
Nancy Fagan, principal, Highlandtown Elementary School
Baltimore City
The number of office referrals that may or may not lead to an out-of-school suspension has dropped drastically in grades K -3. Last year we had approximately 21 office referrals in those grade levels and this year there are only 7. I know this is partly due to the support of our Experience Corps members.

An Essential Element
Mildred Ruiz-Allen, principal, William Blackstone Elementary School

The Program Works
Suzanne Federspeil, principal, Thomas J. Kenney Elementary School
Boston, MA
The Generations Incorporated (host to Experience Corps Boston) tutors working in my school are having a positive impact on our students' academic and social performance. The students are boosting their self-esteem and elevating their self-confidence. Many of the members live close by, so some children have begun to establish outside friendships developed from the tutoring sessions. They are becoming like surrogate grandparents. I know that the members gain as much as the children. I see it in their faces when a child who didn't read suddenly turns around due to their efforts. The program works.

When Can I Read With You Again?
Caitlin Hollister, education director, Blue Hill Avenue Clubhouse
Boston, MA
I am continually impressed by the talent and dedication of our Generations Incorporated (host to Experience Corps Boston) members. This strong partnership allows us to offer consistent one-on-one reading assistance to kids for the first time in our clubs history. Without this, we would be unable to fill a critical gap in our after-school programming. Kids who once shied away from books are now eager to see their reading coaches, asking, "When can I read with you again?"

Reading Scores Rise
Mary Maul, principal, Scranton School
Cleveland
Over the past six years we have seen our reading scores rise from a dismal 13% pass rate to a 51% pass rate. We are slowly climbing that mountain, and without the help of Greater Cleveland Volunteers/Experience Corps tutors, our students would not be as close to the top as they are today.
Our tutors are priceless, and the Greater Cleveland Community will feel the results of their work for years to come - seniors feeling valued, students feeling loved and important in the life of an older person.

By their age alone, Experience Corps members bring a healthy balance to the Johnson community. They provide much needed reading support, and their steady and caring commitments have made a great difference for our students.

The Most Value From Instructional Time
Dr. Nic Clement, superintendent, Flowing Wells School District
Tucson, AZ
Any time you have organization, leadership and shared vision, you have a more effective program, and those are the qualities that Experience Corps brings. We want the most value we can get out of our instructional time, and the frequency of visits and length of commitment of Experience Corps members provides this value.

Through the Arches
John Gomperts, CEO, Experience Corps
Tucson, AZ
Johnson Primary School sits on the edge of the Pascua Yaqui reservation, 20 minutes south of Tucson. The Pascua Yaqui believe that people should pass under an arch when they move from one world to another, so when I visited Johnson Primary recently, I walked under a series of arches.
And boy did I feel like I had moved from one world into another. From a dry, scrubby landscape to a warm, nurturing environment. From the cynicism of Washington to the hope of a school brimming with possibilities. From general skepticism about whether all children, especially poor and minority children, can excel, into a new world where, in fact, folks prove every day that every child can learn.
At Johnson Primary School, more than half the students are from the tribe and almost all the students are children of color. But Dan Weisz, the school´s principal, the faculty, and a team of Experience Corps members expect every child - regardless of family background, income, race, gender, or previous academic performance - to learn.
I've seen a lot of school interventions, and I know often they are typically viewed as nice add-ons, hardly central to a child's success. Just the opposite is true at Johnson Primary - Experience Corps is the key intervention for kids who are struggling to learn to read.
No aspect of the assignment is taken lightly. Experience Corps members are carefully trained and supervised. Both the student and the Experience Corps member know exactly what they need to achieve. Progress is continuously monitored. And the kids and tutors are both held accountable. Johnson Primary, full of students with big challenges and big promise, produces remarkable results.
When I left, I crossed under those arches again, bringing with me warmth and optimism, a sense of how schooling should be, and a feeling that Experience Corps is right with the world.

Completely on Task
Michelle Rosencrans, third grade teacher
Marin County
The only time of day when every student is completely on task is when the Experience Corps members are here. I see positive changes in all my students. The Experience Corps member in my classroom is the best volunteer I've ever had. She is simply an excellent teacher.

How Could I Have Done that Without Her
Karen DeTore, fifth grade teacher, Venetia Elementary School
Marin County
Experience Corps members are critical to the success of the classroom environment, and they make project based learning possible. Every Wednesday when my Experience Corps tutor leaves, I think, "How could I have done that without her."

Enriches the Entire School
Clint Wilkins, head of school, Civicorps Elementary School
Oakland
The presence of Experience Corps members at Civicorps Elementary School enhances our students' academic performance and helps them develop better social skills. Experience Corps members also enrich the entire school, through the positive and strong intergenerational relationships that ensue. We are also appreciative of the other improvements that the program brings, chief among them being fewer classroom disruptions and reduced conflict in the hallways and schoolyard. The result: a greater sense of community. And where there is a strong sense of community, everyone benefits. In brief, this is a win-win-win for all of us!

I've Never Seen Anything That's Clicked Like This
Mr. Allen, fourth and fifth grade teacher, Emerson Elementary School
Oakland
Our children need someone who can provide love, and our Experience Corps member does just that, giving the students stability and an uplifting feeling about themselves. She is effective, patient, and very well organized. I am sure Emerson schools math scores for 4th/5th graders will be elevated by her presence. I wish Experience Corps was all over the school district. I've never seen anything that's clicked like this.

Careful Matches Between Members and Students
Francisco Duran, principal, Everett Middle School
San Francisco
Many of our Experience Corps members have been here for years. They have consistency which makes the program effective. Teachers can trust that the members will be here and have the skills needed to do the job. Experience Corps listens to what teachers need and makes careful matches between members and students.

It Takes a Village
Debra Bates, Kindergarten Teacher, Adlai Stevenson School
Cleveland
To Whom It May Concern:
I would like to extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Experience Corps program. This is my first year at Adlai Stevenson School and currently I teach regular education kindergarten students. I have taught in the Cleveland Municipal School District for 19 years and never had the opportunity to work with such dedicated tutors as I have this year. The tutors are extremely respectful of the needs of all the students in my classroom.
Recently, I received back the scores from diagnostic testing for my class. My students' scores from October to February have greatly improved. I believe that his was possible because of the amount of time that the tutors devoted to helping my students improve in those areas of academic need. Some of the tutors worked with small groups of students within my classroom as well as one-on-one tutoring during the schools day. Many days some of the tutors stayed past their scheduled day to assist my students. The students look forward to their time with the tutors.
It is said that it takes a village to raise a child, and the Experience Corps program helps make that possible. As we work together as a team we can ensure the success of all the students. I look forward to working with the program again next year.

Still Working on the American Dream
Linda Busher, Third grade teacher at K.W. Clement School
Cleveland
Dear Mr. Gomperts,
My tutors are the BEST! Mrs. Bridges, Mrs. Cagle, and Mr. Rose are a tremendous asset to my third grade class and Kenneth W. Clement School. I have come to depend on them for so much. The children they work with have progressed immensely in reading and yes, we do at times sneak in a little math.
One particular child failed repeatedly in math. Yesterday, I am so proud to say, he had a perfect A+ paper! Gradually this student has been coming along with the help of my capable tutors. These are the successes that mean so much to me as a teacher and to the success of each student's life.
I can name six more children who came from a deficit in reading skills to proficient status! All of this happened because of my devoted tutors. I know that there are times that are challenging for them, but they are unflagging in their attendance, effort, and energy. My tutors are an asset to me and to the children. The children have become comfortable with these wise ones in their midst and love them.
Thank you for your tremendous program. I appreciate your efforts and the efforts of Mr. Young who is also such a magnificent coordinator. I would be glad to do a commercial for your organization at any time!
Wishing you the best,
Linda Busher
